Burkina Faso Military Leader Signals Long-Term Rule, Dismissing Democracy

Burkina Faso’s military ruler, Ibrahim Traore, has indicated that the country should “forget about democracy,” signaling a potential continuation of military governance for years.

Traore seized power in a September 2022 coup, overthrowing a junta that had itself taken control just nine months earlier. Since then, he has consolidated power, suppressing opposition and banning political parties in January 2026.

Initially, Traore had pledged a return to civilian rule, but elections were delayed, citing ongoing insecurity from Islamist insurgencies. Last year, the junta extended the transition period, allowing Traore to remain in office until 2029.

His latest remarks suggest that Burkina Faso is moving further away from previous commitments to restore democratic governance, raising concerns about the country’s political future.
