Nigerian Students Win Multiple Gold Medals at International STEM Olympiad in Italy

Three Nigerian students have won multiple gold medals at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad held in Rome, Italy, earning global recognition for the country’s academic excellence in Mathematics and Science.

The students — Egejurum Onyedikachi, Onwubiko Chimdiebube, and Don Anele Munachimso — delivered outstanding performances at the prestigious competition, which attracted participants from more than 150 countries.

Education advocate and Chief Executive Officer of Educare, Alex Onyia, announced the achievement on Tuesday, revealing that the students represented Nigeria after emerging among the best contestants at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad.

According to Onyia, Don Anele Munachimso won two gold medals, emerging as the world’s best in Science while also excelling in another category. Onwubiko Chimdiebube also secured a gold medal, while 11-year-old Onyedikachi Egejurum was crowned the world’s best in Mathematics in the Primary Category.

“The investment is worth it,” Onyia said, noting that Don Anele had earlier distinguished himself as Nigeria’s best performer in IGCSE Chemistry.

He also described Onyedikachi’s victory as the beginning of greater achievements for Nigeria, saying the young pupil had demonstrated exceptional brilliance on the global stage.

The trio qualified to represent Nigeria after outperforming more than 11,500 participants during the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad, a regional competition organised by Onyia.

To support their participation in the international contest, Onyia sponsored the students’ registration, visas, flights, accommodation, and other travel expenses to Rome, where they competed alongside their teachers.

Before the competition, Onyia had expressed confidence in the abilities of the students, describing them as some of Nigeria’s brightest young talents in Mathematics and Science.

He also disclosed that Onyedikachi voluntarily chose to compete in the Science category despite having no prior preparation, describing the young student as a remarkable talent.

The students’ success has been widely celebrated as a significant achievement for Nigeria, particularly at a time when concerns have been raised over the country’s declining participation in major international academic competitions.

The International STEM Olympiad was held at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, bringing together outstanding young scholars from across the world to compete in Mathematics and Science.
