Can you briefly introduce yourself and your background?

My name is Umar Muda Lawal. I had my early education at ATBU Staff Primary School before proceeding to International Secondary School and later Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada, where I completed my secondary education. I went on to study at a university in Malaysia.

After my studies, I returned to Nigeria and ventured into business, working initially with a relative in the construction sector. I later established myself in importation, supplying materials to private construction firms. I remained in business until around 2018, when my community encouraged me to join politics. I accepted the challenge, and, by the grace of God, I was elected in 2019 to represent my constituency in the House of Representatives, where I served for four years.

What inspired your entry into politics, and how would you describe your journey so far?

Calls from my people, who urged me to represent them, largely drove my entry into politics. Initially, I was hesitant, but after consultations with family and experienced political figures, I decided to contest.

My journey has been deeply rewarding. It has exposed me to new experiences and broadened my understanding of leadership and public service. I have learned a lot from this experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

How has your business experience influenced your leadership style?

My background in business has contributed significantly to the development of my leadership approach. Running a business exposed me to discipline, accountability, and strategic thinking. Working alongside successful entrepreneurs also gave me insights into effective management and problem-solving, which I applied in public service, particularly in initiatives aimed at enhancing youth empowerment, improving educational programs, and developing infrastructure that supports these goals.

What is your vision for development, particularly in youth empowerment, education, and infrastructure?

During my time in the office, I prioritised youth development and education. I was among the early voices advocating for the declaration of a state of emergency on youth unemployment in Nigeria due to growing concerns around joblessness.

In education, I facilitated the construction and renovation of over 30 schools across Toro, provided learning materials such as textbooks, exercise books, and school bags, and improved the overall learning environment.

In terms of infrastructure, I contributed to several projects that improved living conditions within the constituency, such as the construction of roads, provision of clean water, and enhancement of public transportation systems. If provided another opportunity, I intend to build on these achievements and expand interventions in these critical sectors.

Why should the people trust and support your candidacy?

I believe my record speaks for itself. I have delivered tangible results during my tenure, and I am confident I can do even more if provided another opportunity. My commitment is to provide better representation, strengthen development efforts, and focus on youth, women, agriculture, and overall community growth.

How do you intend to engage grassroots communities and ensure their voices are heard?

Engagement with the grassroots is essential. I plan to achieve this through regular consultations, including town hall meetings with youths, women, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders. Listening to the people and understanding their needs will guide my actions and priorities.

What role should young people play in politics and national development?

Governance must provide young people with every opportunity to participate. They represent a significant portion of the population and have demonstrated capacity to lead and innovate. Governments at all levels must continue to create avenues for youth inclusion, as their contributions are vital to national development.

What sets you apart from other candidates?

I believe my compassion, accessibility, and commitment to the people distinguish me. During my time in office, I prioritised the needs of my constituents and remained connected with the grassroots. My focus has always been on serving the people rather than pursuing personal interests.

What message do you have for voters ahead of the 2027 elections?

The 2027 elections will be crucial for Nigeria’s future. I urge voters to choose leaders based on credibility, integrity, and commitment to public service. The country faces serious challenges, including poverty and insecurity, and only capable and sincere leaders can address them effectively.

What is your stance on politicians defecting between parties?

I do not support frequent party defections. Politics should be guided by principles and ideology, not convenience. Despite setbacks in my political journey, I chose to remain in my party because I believe in loyalty and long-term growth within a political system.

Finally, what are your hobbies?

I enjoy travelling, reading, and watching movies. I also follow sports, particularly polo.
