NEMA Takes Disaster Preparedness Campaign to Abuja School, Targets Flood Awareness Ahead of Rainy Season

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar, has led a disaster prevention sensitisation campaign to pupils of L.E.A. Primary School Durumi, as part of efforts to build a culture of safety and preparedness among young Nigerians.

The outreach, held in Abuja, forms part of NEMA’s ongoing initiative to promote disaster awareness at the grassroots level, particularly among schoolchildren.

Speaking during the engagement, Umar emphasised the importance of early education in disaster risk reduction, noting that building a resilient nation requires citizens of all ages to be informed and prepared.

“Every citizen has a role to play in preparing for, mitigating, and reducing disaster risks. It begins with awareness, and we must instill that consciousness from a young age,” she said.

The interactive session saw pupils actively participating, asking questions and sharing their understanding of safety practices. The NEMA boss commended their enthusiasm, describing it as a reflection of the dedication of their teachers and parents.

She expressed confidence in the ability of young people to drive meaningful change within their communities through increased awareness and responsible behaviour.

As the rainy season approaches, the Agency said it is intensifying nationwide sensitisation efforts, particularly on flood prevention and preparedness, with the aim of reducing the impact of seasonal disasters.

NEMA reaffirmed its commitment to reaching all segments of society through targeted campaigns designed to promote safety, preparedness, and community resilience.
