The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar, has held a strategic meeting with the Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, to strengthen inter-agency collaboration on flood preparedness and disaster management ahead of the 2026 rainy season.

The meeting focused on developing coordinated response strategies based on NIHSA’s recently released 2026 Annual Flood Outlook report, which identified about 14,000 communities in 266 Local Government Areas across 33 states as high-risk flood zones.

According to Zubaida Umar, the collaboration is aimed at improving preparedness, reducing vulnerabilities, and minimising the impact of flooding on affected communities across the country.

“Our discussion centred on aligning preparedness strategies based on the agency’s 2026 Annual Flood Outlook report. We are taking proactive steps to reduce the projected scale to the lowest possible level and safeguard lives and livelihoods,” she said.

The engagement underscores ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and relevant agencies to strengthen disaster risk management and ensure timely response mechanisms in vulnerable areas.

The Annual Flood Outlook issued by NIHSA serves as a key planning tool for emergency agencies, state governments, and communities in preparing for possible flooding incidents during the rainy season.
