President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism following a joint military operation carried out by Nigerian and United States armed forces in the Lake Chad Basin.
According to the President, the coordinated overnight operation targeted members of the Islamic State group and resulted in the elimination of a senior terrorist commander identified as Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, alongside several of his lieutenants.
The strike reportedly targeted the terrorist leader’s compound within the Lake Chad region, an area that has long served as a stronghold for insurgent activities affecting parts of Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
President Tinubu described the operation as a significant example of growing security collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in tackling terrorism and violent extremism.
He commended the professionalism and courage displayed by personnel from both countries during the mission and expressed appreciation to the United States government for its continued support.
“Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives,” the President stated.
Tinubu also extended gratitude to Donald Trump for what he described as leadership and unwavering support toward the operation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to intensifying military operations against terrorist groups and dismantling insurgent enclaves across the country.
Security analysts say the development marks another major counterterrorism effort within the Lake Chad Basin, where regional forces have continued operations against extremist networks linked to the Islamic State and other armed groups.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly stressed the importance of international cooperation, intelligence sharing, and joint military operations in addressing cross-border terrorism and strengthening regional security.
