New figures released by the UK Department for Education have highlighted the changing demographic composition of schools across England, with White British pupils now accounting for less than half of the student population in several local authority areas.

According to data for the 2025–2026 academic year, the proportion of White British children in schools stands at 41.5 per cent in Milton Keynes, 38.4 per cent in Blackburn, and 37.3 per cent in Bradford.

Other areas recorded lower percentages, including 34.5 per cent in Wolverhampton, 28.7 per cent in Manchester, and 23.6 per cent in Birmingham.

The figures were lower still in Leicester at 19.5 per cent, while Barking and Dagenham recorded 14.9 per cent, Luton 13.7 per cent, and Slough 9.2 per cent.

The statistics reflect the growing ethnic diversity of England’s school-age population, particularly in major urban centres and areas that have experienced significant migration and population growth over recent decades.

The data has generated discussion on social media and among education observers, with some viewing it as evidence of England’s increasingly multicultural society, while others have raised questions about the long-term implications for education, community integration, and public policy.

The Department for Education has not attached any policy recommendations to the figures, which form part of its regular collection of school census data.
