The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has condemned the treatment of Nigerians affected by recent developments in South Africa, stating that they had committed no offence other than being targeted because of the colour of their skin.
Speaking on the ongoing evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa following presidential approval for their orderly return, Dabiri-Erewa expressed concern over the circumstances that led to their displacement.
“They didn’t commit any crime; the only crime they committed is the colour of their skin,” she said.
The NiDCOM boss assured that arrangements had been put in place to facilitate the safe return of affected Nigerians, stressing that the welfare and protection of citizens remain a priority.
She encouraged the evacuees to remain hopeful as they prepare to return home, describing Nigeria as a place of comfort, belonging and opportunity.
“Home is nice. Home is sweet,” Dabiri-Erewa added.
The evacuation follows the Federal Government’s approval for the orderly repatriation of Nigerians affected by the situation in South Africa, with relevant agencies coordinating efforts to ensure their safe return and reintegration.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerians both at home and abroad while continuing diplomatic engagements on issues affecting citizens in foreign countries.
