How Dashrath Manjhi Carved a Road Through a Mountain for His Village

The story of Dashrath Manjhi remains one of the most remarkable examples of determination and perseverance in modern history.

Manjhi, a poor labourer from Gehlaur village in the Indian state of Bihar, embarked on an extraordinary mission after the death of his wife, Falguni Devi, who was reportedly unable to receive timely medical attention because a mountain blocked the shortest route to healthcare facilities.

Determined to prevent others from facing the same hardship, Manjhi began cutting a path through the mountain in 1960 using only a hammer and chisel. Despite widespread ridicule and skepticism from villagers, he continued the task day after day for more than two decades.

After 22 years of relentless effort, Manjhi succeeded in carving a road approximately 360 feet long and 30 feet wide through solid rock. The passage significantly reduced the travel distance between villages and nearby towns, cutting a journey of about 55 kilometres to roughly 15 kilometres.

The road transformed access to healthcare, education and economic opportunities for residents of more than 60 villages in the area, earning Manjhi widespread recognition for his contribution to society. Gehlaur became known internationally because of his achievement.

Over the years, his story has been documented by historians, writers and filmmakers, and he became popularly known as the “Mountain Man of India.”

Following his death in 2007, Manjhi received a state funeral in recognition of his service to the community. The Government of India later honoured his legacy by issuing a commemorative postage stamp bearing his image.

Today, Dashrath Manjhi’s life continues to inspire millions around the world as a powerful reminder that determination, resilience and a commitment to helping others can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
