The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end, with 16 nations eliminated from the tournament after failing to secure places in the Round of 32.
Among the notable teams exiting the competition are Uruguay, Tunisia, Turkey, South Korea and Scotland, while tournament debutants Uzbekistan and Curacao also bowed out despite spirited performances.
The expanded 48-team tournament saw fierce competition across the groups, with only 32 nations advancing to the knockout stage.
Africa emerged as one of the strongest-performing continents, with nine of its 10 representatives progressing to the next round. Tunisia was the only African nation eliminated, finishing bottom of Group F without registering a point.

Several teams left the tournament despite commendable performances. Scotland finished third in Group C but narrowly missed qualification as one of the best third-placed teams. Iran remained unbeaten throughout the group stage, recording three draws, but failed to accumulate enough points to advance.
One of the tournament’s biggest surprises was Uruguay’s early exit. The South American giants, who have a rich World Cup history, finished third in Group H with just two points and were unable to secure a knockout berth.
South Korea also suffered disappointment after finishing behind Mexico and South Africa in Group A, ending their World Cup campaign at the group stage.
With the group phase now complete, attention shifts to the Round of 32, which begins on Sunday, as the remaining teams continue their quest for football’s most prestigious prize in the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup.
