Ghana Demands Investigation After Citizen Killed During Anti-Immigrant Protest in South Africa
The Government of Ghana has called for a full, transparent and expedited investigation into the killing of one of its citizens during an anti-immigrant protest in South Africa.
In a statement, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had formally lodged a protest with the South African authorities and urged them to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killing.
The ministry also appealed to the African Union to urgently consider its petition over what it described as repeated xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals living in South Africa.
According to the ministry, arrangements are underway to repatriate the victim’s body to Ghana.
It also advised Ghanaian citizens residing in South Africa to remain vigilant, avoid areas considered high-risk and immediately contact the Ghana High Commission if they face any threat to their safety.
The Ghanaian government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad and expressed hope that justice would be served in the case.
