Gambia Navy Intercepts 112 Suspected Irregular Migrants in Territorial Waters

The Gambia Navy has foiled an attempted irregular migration operation, intercepting a vessel carrying 112 suspected migrants within the country’s territorial waters off Faraba.

The interception was carried out on Friday, July 10, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration and strengthen maritime security.

According to the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), naval personnel intercepted the overcrowded vessel before it could continue its dangerous sea voyage, rescuing all those on board and taking them into safe custody in line with established procedures.

The intercepted migrants comprised 77 adult males, 28 adult females and seven minors.

The military said the successful operation highlights the Gambia Navy’s continued vigilance in safeguarding the country’s maritime domain while supporting national and regional efforts to combat irregular migration, human trafficking and other forms of transnational organised crime.

The Gambia Armed Forces warned that irregular migration by sea remains one of the most dangerous forms of migration, with many migrants risking their lives aboard overcrowded and unsafe vessels.

The military also noted that many vulnerable migrants often fall victim to human traffickers and migrant smugglers who exploit their desperation for financial gain.

It therefore urged members of the public, particularly young people, to avoid embarking on such hazardous journeys and instead utilise safe, legal and regular migration channels.

The Gambia Armed Forces reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the country’s territorial waters and working with relevant national and international partners to address irregular migration and enhance maritime security.
