Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has approved the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) Agreement, with the payment of arrears for key allowances to academic staff in the state’s tertiary institutions.
The approval covers the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professorial Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), reinforcing the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of university lecturers and promoting quality higher education in the state.
The decision followed the submission of a report by the Yobe State Fact-Finding Committee on the Review of Welfare and Remuneration of Academic Staff, which was earlier presented to the Acting Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Mohammed Goje.
The committee was mandated to assess welfare packages and remuneration for academic staff by visiting selected state-owned universities across the country to compare existing practices and recommend appropriate measures for Yobe State.
Governor Buni directed that payment of the approved allowances should commence from August 2026, describing the move as part of his administration’s efforts to reward excellence, strengthen industrial harmony and sustain high academic standards in state-owned tertiary institutions.
With the approval, Yobe joins the growing number of states implementing the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement, aimed at enhancing staff welfare and improving the quality of teaching, research and learning.
Receiving the committee’s report, Acting SSG, Dr. Mohammed Goje, commended members of the committee for carrying out the assignment diligently and professionally, noting that their recommendations would contribute to strengthening the relationship between the state government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, said the committee visited several universities, including Bauchi State University, Kaduna State University (KASU) and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, among others, to study best practices in staff welfare and remuneration.
Represented by Prof. Mohammed Musa Lawan, the commissioner also recommended increased research grants, annual salary increments, improved welfare incentives and sustained funding for tertiary institutions to enhance efficiency, research output and academic excellence.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of the Yobe State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Muhammad Adam, expressed appreciation to Governor Buni for prioritising the welfare of lecturers and demonstrating commitment to strengthening higher education in the state.
He urged members of the union to reciprocate the government’s gesture through greater dedication to teaching, research and community service while maintaining industrial harmony in the university system.
