In a recent engagement forum in the United States of America, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, emphasised the urgent need for reforms within the United Nations Security Council. Ambassador Tuggar stressed the importance of democratising the Security Council to reflect current global realities, including Nigeria’s prominent role as the largest country in Africa and a member of the G20.

“Nigeria needs to be in that Security Council as a permanent member,” Ambassador Tuggar asserted, highlighting Nigeria’s significant contributions to combating terrorism, particularly in the northeastern Lake Chad region, where the Multinational Joint Task Force has successfully degraded the Boko Haram insurgency over the last 15 years.

The meeting in Washington with US officials served multiple purposes, according to the Minister. It aimed to strengthen the relationship between Nigeria and the United States and build upon the outcomes of the recent US-Nigeria Binational Commission meeting held in Nigeria. Ambassador Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s foreign policy agenda, emphasizing the principles of Democracy, Demography, Development, and Diaspora (the 4Ds).

“Nigeria is the largest democratic country in Africa, with a population of 220 million. By 2050, we are projected to become the third-largest country globally, with a population of 400 million. Additionally, Nigeria boasts the largest economy on the African continent,” concluded Ambassador Tuggar.
