Aishatu Binani Makes History as Nigeria’s First Female Airline Owner with Binani Air
In an industry long dominated by men, Nigerian businesswoman and politician Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani has etched her name into the nation’s aviation history as the first Nigerian woman to establish and own a commercial airline.
The launch of Binani Air marks another milestone in the career of the Adamawa-born entrepreneur, whose journey has spanned business, philanthropy and public service.
Born in Adamawa State, Binani built a successful career in business before venturing into politics. She represented the Yola North/Yola South/Girei Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019 before being elected to the Senate, where she represented Adamawa Central Senatorial District from 2019 to 2023.
She gained national prominence in 2023 when she became the first woman to emerge as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Adamawa State, making history as one of the few women to contest for the governorship of a major Nigerian state under a leading political party.
Now, Binani has expanded her legacy into aviation with the establishment of Binani Air, a carrier designed to strengthen regional connectivity and provide premium air transport services within and beyond Nigeria.
The airline operates a modern fleet that includes Embraer E170 regional jets and Hawker 800XP business aircraft, serving routes such as Abuja, Lagos and Yola, while also offering charter services for corporate, government and private clients.
Industry observers say the airline reflects Binani’s long-standing commitment to enterprise and national development, with a focus on operational safety, reliability and customer service.
According to the company, safety remains the airline’s highest priority, with experienced flight crews, rigorous maintenance standards and internationally accepted operational procedures guiding every flight.
Beyond her achievements in business and politics, Binani is also recognised for her philanthropic work through initiatives that support education, women’s empowerment, healthcare and youth development, particularly in northern Nigeria.
Her entry into Nigeria’s aviation industry is being hailed as a significant step for women’s participation in sectors traditionally dominated by men, demonstrating that leadership and entrepreneurship transcend gender.
As Binani Air continues to expand its operations, the airline is expected to contribute to improved domestic air connectivity, job creation and economic growth, while inspiring a new generation of Nigerian women to pursue opportunities in aviation, business and public service.
For many, Binani’s story is one of determination and resilience—from entrepreneur and legislator to aviation pioneer—underscoring the growing role of women in shaping Nigeria’s economic future.
