Governor Bala Defects from PDP to APM
Governor Bala Mohammed has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Allied Peoples Movement, citing unresolved internal crises within the opposition party.
The governor made the announcement on Saturday after a high-level meeting with political stakeholders convened to assess the implications of the recent Supreme Court of Nigeria judgment on the PDP’s leadership dispute.
Mohammed disclosed that he had spent the past eight days in Abuja engaging party leaders in efforts to resolve the crisis but noted that the court’s ruling, which nullified parallel conventions conducted by rival factions, had significantly altered the party’s structure.
According to him, the verdict effectively left the party without clear legal leadership, placing interim oversight in the hands of its Board of Trustees and deepening uncertainty within its ranks.
“After careful consideration and wide consultations with leaders and stakeholders across the country, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results,” he said.
The governor expressed gratitude to the PDP for providing a platform for his political growth but emphasized that his decision was driven by the need to ensure continuity in governance and political stability in Bauchi State.
“As responsible leaders, we cannot allow our people to be left without a credible and effective political platform,” he stated.
Mohammed described the APM as a viable alternative free from legal encumbrances, adding that the move was strategic and aimed at positioning his political structure for future electoral success.
He also revealed that members of the State Executive Council with political ambitions had resigned in compliance with legal requirements.
Outlining next steps, the governor announced plans for a structured transition, including the establishment of a compliance committee, commencement of online membership registration, engagement with APM leadership, and the creation of a committee to interface with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Despite the defection, Mohammed maintained an emotional connection to his former party, stating, “We remain PDP at heart. We are leaving not out of bitterness, but out of necessity—to continue the struggle for good governance.”
He called on supporters to remain calm and united, describing the move as a deliberate political repositioning rather than a reaction to uncertainty.
