Nigeria Launches FreeTV Platform to Expand Access to Digital Broadcasting
Nigeria has launched FreeTV, a national digital television platform designed to provide households across the country with access to more than 100 television channels without monthly subscription fees.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, by the Presidency ahead of the official rollout scheduled for June 17, as part of Nigeria’s ongoing transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.
According to the Presidency, the platform will offer Nigerians free access to digital television, improved picture quality, and a broader range of local and international content as the country intensifies efforts to expand its digital broadcasting ecosystem.
Officials explained that the initiative is aimed at deepening access to information, promoting local content production, and enhancing the quality of broadcasting services nationwide.
The FreeTV platform is also expected to reduce the cost burden on households while supporting Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.
The government noted that the rollout marks a significant milestone in the country’s drive toward modernising its media and communications infrastructure and ensuring wider inclusion in the digital economy.
