Angelina Jolie Honours Chibok Girls at Moroccan Art Exhibition

Hollywood actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie has paid tribute to the abducted Chibok schoolgirls by attending the opening of “Statues Also Breathe,” a powerful exhibition at the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech, Morocco.

The exhibition, created by French artist Prune Nourry in collaboration with Nigerian musician and activist Ade Bantu, serves as a moving memorial to the Chibok girls, many of whom remain unaccounted for more than a decade after their abduction.

The installation features 108 handcrafted clay sculptures inspired by the renowned ancient Ife bronze and terracotta heads, celebrated worldwide as masterpieces of African art and symbols of identity, dignity and resilience.

Each sculpture was created using photographs entrusted to the artist by the mothers of the abducted girls, transforming personal memories into works of art that honour the lives and identities of the missing students.

The Chibok tragedy began on April 14, 2014, when Boko Haram insurgents attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, abducting 276 schoolgirls while they were preparing for examinations. The incident sparked global outrage and inspired the international #BringBackOurGirls campaign, drawing support from world leaders, celebrities and human rights advocates.

Over the years, many of the girls have regained their freedom through rescue operations, negotiations and escapes. However, Nigerian authorities have consistently maintained that dozens of the abducted girls are still missing, while efforts to secure their release continue.

The exhibition highlights not only the personal loss suffered by the families but also the enduring hope that those still missing will one day be reunited with their loved ones.

Jolie’s participation underscores continued international solidarity with the Chibok families and reinforces global calls for the protection of children, especially girls, from violence and attacks on education.

Through art, “Statues Also Breathe” preserves the memory of the Chibok girls while drawing renewed attention to the importance of education, human dignity and the ongoing fight against violent extremism.
