African Nations Unite in Abuja to Advance Digital Transformation, Technological Innovation

African countries have reaffirmed their commitment to building a stronger, more resilient digital future as the 7th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Plenipotentiaries of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) commenced in Abuja.

The high-level gathering has brought together member states to chart a common strategy for advancing Africa’s digital transformation, with discussions focusing on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, connectivity, digital inclusion and other emerging information and communication technology (ICT) priorities.

A major outcome of the conference is the shared determination by African nations to play a more active role in shaping global digital policies and technological innovation rather than remaining consumers of technologies developed elsewhere.

Delegates agreed that Africa must actively participate in creating the technologies, innovations and regulatory frameworks that will drive the continent’s economic growth, strengthen digital resilience and position it competitively in the global technology ecosystem.

Member states also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening regional cooperation to ensure that digital technologies are designed to reflect Africa’s unique development priorities, cultural diversity and socio-economic realities.

Among the key initiatives highlighted is the development of an African artificial intelligence language model that incorporates major African languages, ensuring that the continent’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage is represented in emerging AI technologies.

The initiative has received broad support from participating countries, with delegates describing it as a significant step toward promoting digital sovereignty, innovation and inclusive technological development across Africa.

The conference further underscored the importance of collaboration among African nations in strengthening digital infrastructure, enhancing cybersecurity, expanding access to affordable connectivity and promoting digital inclusion.

Participants expressed optimism that stronger continental cooperation would enable Africa to speak with a unified voice on global digital issues while accelerating innovation and creating opportunities for sustainable economic development.

The ongoing conference reinforces Africa’s collective vision of building a digitally empowered continent where technology is developed with Africa, for Africa, and serves the aspirations and development needs of its people.
