APC Campaign Council Accuses Obi of Misleading Nigerians Over Anambra Debt Record
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has accused former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi of making misleading claims about the financial record of his administration.
The council’s position follows recent disclosures by the Anambra State Government concerning external loans associated with Obi’s tenure between 2006 and 2014.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the council’s spokesman, Dele Alake, the campaign council said the state government’s records contradicted claims that Obi left Anambra without a debt burden.
The Anambra State Government has said records attributed to the Debt Management Office (DMO) showed that eight external borrowing facilities, valued at about $123.77 million, were associated with projects during Obi’s administration. It said about $92.35 million remained outstanding as of June 30, 2026, equivalent to approximately ₦127.37 billion at the exchange rate used by the state government.
The loans were linked to projects covering areas including malaria control, education, healthcare, erosion control and agricultural development. The state government said subsequent administrations had continued to service the obligations.
Obi, however, has rejected the allegations, maintaining that he left office without outstanding salaries, pensions, gratuities or debts owed to contractors for duly executed and certified projects. He also challenged the state government to provide evidence to the contrary.
The APC Campaign Council also raised allegations concerning unpaid salaries during Obi’s administration, citing a 2006 memo attributed to his then Chief of Staff, Chuks Ileogbunam, concerning salary arrears owed to workers of the Anambra State Water Corporation.
The council said the claims were inconsistent with Obi’s public assertion that he left the state without outstanding liabilities.
Alake further criticised Obi over his recent political activities and questioned his association with individuals facing corruption-related investigations. The campaign council’s statements on those matters are political allegations and have not, by themselves, established wrongdoing by Obi.
The APC council recalled Obi’s reported pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it were established that his administration left Anambra with a debt burden.
The controversy has continued to generate competing claims between Obi and the Anambra State Government. While the state has presented records it says demonstrate outstanding obligations linked to his administration, Obi and his camp have disputed the government’s interpretation of the figures and the nature of the loans.
The APC Campaign Council urged Obi to respond to the issues raised by the state government and its documentary evidence.
