The National Blood Service Commission (NBSC) has charged those involved in blood transfusion to register with the commission or face sanctions as provided by the National Health Act 2014 and NBSC Act 2021.
The Acting Director General of the commission, Dr Omale Amedu, made this statement at a press briefing on the implementation of the National Blood Service Commission Regulatory Policies as provided in the NBSC Act 2021 on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to the Director-General, the commission recognizes the need to develop guidance on establishing acceptable systems for safety in blood transfusion, hence the inauguration of expert committee in late 2021 to develop the guidelines using international best practices.

The DG decried non-compliance of the blood actors to the regulatory body, saying that the commission would not allow people transfuse infected or expired blood to the people.
He added that no blood shall be transfused anywhere in Nigeria without the commission’s seal of accreditation.
Lamenting the consequences of sharp and unsafe practices of blood transfusion in Nigeria, the DG said Nigeria has approximately 11.4 million people in the general population living with hepatitis B, about 6million of whom are children below 5 years, and about 3.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS, stressing that the practices are not acceptable for Nigerians.
