CDS Gen. Musa Advocates for Indigenous Military Innovations to Boost National Security

By Matthew Eloyi

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has emphasised the critical role of research and development in strengthening military capabilities and safeguarding Nigeria’s national security.

Speaking at the inaugural seminar and exhibition of the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) in Abuja, Musa called for greater synergy among key stakeholders to foster indigenous equipment support for the armed forces.

“Given the level of involvement of the armed forces in security operations, developing indigenous equipment support has become increasingly crucial,” Musa stated, stressing the need for a military-industrial complex involving government agencies, research institutions, and defence contractors.

Musa pointed out that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, cyber warfare, and unmanned aerial systems have become essential for modern military readiness.

He said, “Investments in these areas are critical for maintaining military readiness and staying ahead of adversaries.”

Highlighting the commendable progress in military research innovations across Nigeria, Musa expressed optimism about a framework that would further strengthen military operational effectiveness amid evolving security challenges.

The Director General of DRDB, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Ndagi, echoed these sentiments, warning that over-reliance on imported military hardware undermines national security.

Ndagi emphasized the importance of developing indigenous technologies to build a robust military-industrial complex tailored to Nigeria’s contemporary security needs.
