CDS Orders Probe into Alleged Unjust Six-Year Incarceration of Naval Officer

By Matthew Eloyi

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged wrongful imprisonment of Seaman Abbas Haruna, a Nigerian Naval rating, who has reportedly been held for six years.

The directive was announced on Monday in a statement by the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, in Abuja.

Gusau emphasised the Armed Forces’ commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law, assuring that the military court-martial process is designed to ensure fairness and equal opportunity in line with established military procedures.

“The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course,” Gusau stated, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information during the investigation.

He also pledged a transparent and swift process to resolve the case.

The probe follows growing concerns over the prolonged detention of Seaman Haruna, raising questions about the military’s judicial practices.
