China Unveils 20-Storey AI-Powered Vertical Farm to Boost Food Production
China has taken another step in modern agriculture with the operation of a 20-storey unmanned vertical farm in Chengdu, designed to produce fresh vegetables throughout the year using artificial intelligence and automated technology.
The facility, which began operations in late 2023 under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, relies on AI systems, robots, LED lighting and climate control to grow crops indoors without the need for traditional farming methods.
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, the project is part of China’s long-term strategy to strengthen food security through advanced agricultural technology.
Unlike conventional farms, the indoor plant factory is protected from harsh weather conditions such as droughts, floods and seasonal changes, allowing crops to grow in carefully controlled environments all year round.
Researchers say the technology enables multiple harvests annually while using less land and water than traditional farming.
Experts believe that as urban populations continue to grow and available farmland becomes more limited, innovations such as vertical farming could play a key role in meeting future food demands and transforming global agriculture.
The project highlights China’s growing investment in smart farming technologies aimed at improving food production efficiency and sustainability.
