COAS Commissions Remodelled School in Edo, Reaffirms Army’s Commitment to Community Development

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned a newly remodelled school at Ezomo Community in Benin City, Edo State, as part of the Nigerian Army’s efforts to strengthen civil-military relations and support community development.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Friday, November 6, 2026, was carried out under the Army’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) programme.

The project was initiated by the Chief of Standards and Evaluation (Army), Major General Bobby Ugiagbe, to provide a better learning environment for pupils and teachers while promoting mutual trust and cooperation between the Nigerian Army and the civilian population.

Speaking at the event, Lieutenant General Shaibu reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to implementing impactful community development projects that complement government efforts in providing essential social amenities, particularly in the education sector.

He explained that such interventions form part of the Army’s non-kinetic approach to promoting peace, security and sustainable development in communities.

The COAS expressed confidence that the remodelled school would improve teaching and learning, enhance pupils’ academic performance and strengthen the existing relationship between the Army and the host community.

He urged residents to take ownership of the facility, maintain it properly and protect it against vandalism to ensure its long-term benefits.

Lieutenant General Shaibu also commended Major General Ugiagbe for his initiative, foresight and commitment to improving the lives of people in the Army’s host communities.

Earlier, Major General Ugiagbe said the project was executed under the Nigerian Army’s CIMIC programme as part of efforts to give back to the community and strengthen civil-military relations.

He appreciated the Chief of Army Staff for his support and encouragement, which contributed to the successful completion of the project.
