Committee Urges Police Authorities to Enhance National Security

In a recent session held in Abuja to scrutinize the 2024 budget, the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, co-chaired by Sen. Abdulhamid Madori and Rep. Abubakar Yalleman, has called upon the Minister of Police Affairs and the Inspector General of Police to take decisive measures in improving the prevailing security conditions in the country.

Emphasizing the paramount importance of safeguarding lives and property, the committee underscored that ensuring security is a fundamental duty of any government. Senator Yalleman affirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to undertaking necessary actions to bolster the capabilities and effectiveness of the Nigeria Police.

“We will do justice to the budget and ensure that our police force and all supporting institutions are able to function as effectively and efficiently as possible,” stated Rep. Abubakar Yalleman during the joint session.

Addressing the challenges faced by the police, Minister of Police Affairs Sen. Ibrahim Gaidam acknowledged funding as a major hurdle. He assured that the ministry, in collaboration with the police and other relevant institutions, is actively working to ensure they fulfil their mandates of guaranteeing internal security.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, expressed determination to transform the current narrative surrounding the police force under his leadership. He outlined the vision for a proactive police force capable of combatting criminal activities across the diverse communities of the nation.

“With the support of the National Assembly and the entire nation, we are optimistic that the security situation in the country will see marked improvement,” stated Inspector General Egbetokun, seeking collaborative efforts for a safer Nigeria.
