COP28: Global Leaders Gather in Dubai to Confront Urgent Climate Challenges

By Matthew Eloyi

The United Nations climate conference commenced in Dubai on Thursday, calling on nations to intensify efforts to combat global warming and transition away from fossil fuels. The host nation, the United Arab Emirates, faces heightened scrutiny due to its oil-rich status.

Against the backdrop of soaring emissions and a forecasted record-breaking year for global temperatures, the two-week-long climate negotiations in the opulent Gulf city bring leaders, activists, and lobbyists together, with over 97,000 attendees making it the largest climate gathering in history. Britain’s King Charles III joins world leaders in a critical moment for climate action.

Termed COP28, the UN and the United Arab Emirates assert that these talks are the most significant since the historic Paris Agreement in 2015. The accord aimed to restrict global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius since the preindustrial era, with a safer limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius preferred. Scientists warn that current efforts are insufficient, stressing the need for swifter and deeper emissions cuts to avert catastrophic climate impacts.

On the eve of the summit, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres advocated for a complete “phaseout” of fossil fuels, a contentious proposal supported by many nations and scientists. Guterres emphasized, “Obviously, I am strongly in favour of language that includes a phaseout, even with a reasonable time framework,” highlighting the urgency of addressing this pivotal issue.

A pivotal focus of the conference will be a comprehensive review of the world’s limited progress in curbing global warming, demanding an official response.

UN climate chief Simon Stiell expressed concern, stating, “Right now, we’re taking baby steps where we should be taking great leaps and great strides to get us to where we need to be.”

As the world grapples with the escalating climate crisis, global leaders face the challenge of aligning efforts to secure a sustainable future.
