Vice President Kashim Shettima has received a comprehensive briefing on Nigeria’s priorities and expectations ahead of the high-level engagements at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The briefing was delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, said Nigeria would use the global gathering to advance its national interests and build on its advocacy for reforms within the United Nations.

He said Vice President Shettima, who is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the General Assembly, would present the President’s message on various issues, including Nigeria’s push for permanent representation on the UN Security Council. The Presidency has confirmed that Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, said the country’s participation would focus on deepening reforms at the global body and promoting outcomes that would have meaningful impact on member states.

The 81st UN General Assembly is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The General Debate is scheduled for September 22–26 and September 28, 2026.
