Dangote Unveils Plan to Raise Refining Capacity to 2.1 Million Barrels Per Day Across Africa

Dangote Industries Limited has unveiled plans to increase its combined refining capacity to 2.1 million barrels per day across Nigeria and Kenya as part of its long-term strategy to expand its industrial footprint across Africa.

The Group Vice President for Oil and Gas, Devakumar Edwin, disclosed the plan during a visit by a delegation from Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo (SNPC) to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos.

According to a statement issued by the Dangote Group on Wednesday, the planned expansion will raise the company’s refining capacity to 2.1 million barrels per day, comprising 1.4 million barrels per day in Nigeria and a proposed 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Kenya to serve East African markets.

Edwin also revealed that the group plans to invest an additional 46 billion dollars between 2026 and 2028 across its refining, cement and fertiliser businesses as part of efforts to accelerate industrialisation across the continent.

The visit by the Congolese delegation formed part of discussions on a strategic partnership between SNPC and Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals aimed at strengthening the Republic of the Congo’s supply of refined petroleum products while promoting regional energy cooperation and industrial integration.

Leading the delegation, SNPC Managing Director, Maixent Raoul Ominga, described the refinery as a major industrial achievement for Africa and expressed interest in establishing a long-term partnership with the Dangote Group.

He said discussions focused on cooperation in refining, petroleum product supply, energy security, industrial development and knowledge sharing, adding that the refinery demonstrates Africa’s capacity to finance, build and operate world-class industrial infrastructure.

Ominga also commended Dangote Group’s investments in the Republic of the Congo, particularly in the cement sector, noting that they have strengthened local industrial capacity and improved access to construction materials.

President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Africa’s industrial development through value addition, regional partnerships and strategic investments.

“We are for Africa, not just Nigeria. Tell us what you need, and we will see how we can work together,” Dangote said.

He added that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has set a new benchmark for fuel quality in Africa by producing petroleum products that meet international standards, while improving access to cleaner fuels and reducing the continent’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.

The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of Dangote Industries and SNPC to deepen regional energy cooperation, strengthen African value chains and promote greater self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products.

Also present at the meeting were Group Executive Director, Commercial, Oil and Gas, Fatima Dangote, Adviser to the President of the Republic of the Congo, Peggy Ndongo, and advisers to the SNPC Managing Director, Aymar Ebiou and Norbert Mabiala.
