Demolition of Buildings Obstructing Waterways Begins in Abuja

Demolition operations have commenced in Maitama, Abuja, following a directive by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to remove structures obstructing waterways and drainage channels across the Federal Capital Territory.

The exercise is part of the FCT Administration’s efforts to tackle flooding, restore natural water channels and improve the effectiveness of Abuja’s drainage infrastructure.

Wike had earlier warned that structures identified as being built on or obstructing designated waterways would be removed during the exercise, which is scheduled to run from Tuesday to Saturday.

The Minister stressed that the enforcement is aimed at protecting lives and property by clearing obstructions that prevent the free flow of stormwater, particularly during heavy rainfall.

The commencement of the demolition in Maitama marks a further step by the FCT Administration to enforce development regulations and address environmental and drainage challenges across the nation’s capital.
