Doctors Warn Prolonged Sitting, Poor Posture Can Trigger Serious Spinal Damage

Medical experts are raising fresh concerns over the dangers of prolonged sitting in a fixed, bent posture after a recent clinical case highlighted how everyday habits can place severe strain on the spine. According to doctors, the problem is not sitting itself, but remaining motionless for extended periods while leaning forward, a posture increasingly common during phone use.

Specialists explain that the lumbar spine relies on regular movement to maintain healthy blood circulation and proper nerve function. When the spine is held in a stressed position for too long, pressure can build on spinal structures, compressing nerves and limiting oxygen supply to sensitive tissues.

In the reported case, extended time spent sitting on the toilet while using a mobile phone forced the spine into a sustained forward-leaning position. This prolonged pressure affected the cauda equina, a bundle of nerves at the base of the spine responsible for movement and sensation in the lower body. Medical research shows that compression and reduced blood flow to these nerves can worsen rapidly if not relieved.

Health professionals stress that environments considered harmless can become risky when posture and duration are ignored. To reduce the risk of spinal injury, doctors advise limiting toilet sitting to no more than 10 to 15 minutes, avoiding phone use while seated, and maintaining a neutral spinal position.

Experts say small changes in daily habits can go a long way in protecting spinal health and preventing long-term complications.
