DSS Urges Organised Labour to Prioritise Peace Over Protests Amid Economic Concerns
By Auwal Ahmad
The Department of State Services (DSS) has called on sections of organised labour to reconsider their plans for protests scheduled between February 27 and 28, 2024, citing concerns over potential disruptions to peace and public order.
This is contained in a statement in an official Twitter post by Peter Afunanya, Director, PR & Strategic Communication, Abuja.
While acknowledging the legitimate right of the labour movement to protest, the DSS emphasised the importance of dialogue and negotiation in addressing economic grievances. The agency warned of possible attempts by certain elements to exploit the protests to incite violence, exacerbating the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.
Highlighting government efforts to alleviate economic conditions, the DSS urged citizens to allow authorities the opportunity to address existing difficulties through peaceful means. Quoting the renowned poet JP Clark, the agency emphasised the dangers of escalated conflicts and underscored the need to safeguard internal stability and unity.
In a plea to all sectors of society, including parents, political parties, and religious institutions, the DSS urged collective efforts to eschew violence and demonstrate leadership during these challenging times. The agency cautioned against divisive rhetoric and urged vigilance against external forces seeking to destabilise the nation.
Reaffirming its opposition to violence, the DSS pledged to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure lasting peace in the country.
