Kontagora Abductions: Diocese Releases Names of 50 Pupils Who Escaped, 265 Still in Captivity
The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has released the names of 50 pupils of St. Mary’s Catholic Private Primary and Secondary School, Kontagora, Niger State, who successfully escaped from their abductors and have now been reunited with their families.
The development was confirmed by the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, in a statement issued on Sunday through his media aide, Daniel Atori.
According to the Bishop, the pupils unexpectedly found their way home on their own after fleeing from their captors. Their return was first noticed by parents, who alerted school authorities. This prompted the school management and diocesan officials to conduct home visits to verify each child’s safe return.

“As of Sunday, 23 November 2025, we received encouraging reports that 50 pupils have escaped and are now with their parents,” the statement read.
265 Victims Still in Captivity
Despite the encouraging update, a large number of victims remain unaccounted for. Bishop Yohanna disclosed that 236 primary school pupils, three children of staff members, 14 secondary school students, and 12 teachers — totalling 265 people — are still being held in captivity.
He called for continued prayers, public support, and full cooperation with security agencies as efforts intensify to secure their safe release.
Authorities say the names of the 50 rescued pupils have been formally documented and shared with their families, while security operations continue across the region.
