FG Reaffirms Commitment to Eliminating Malaria, Boosting Domestic Healthcare Financing
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to eliminate malaria in Nigeria while strengthening domestic financing for healthcare to reduce the country’s reliance on external donor support.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, stated this when he received the Board of Trustees of Malaria Consortium on a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Abuja.
The delegation visited to congratulate Nigeria on the significant decline in malaria parasite prevalence among children aged six to 59 months, from 42 per cent in 2010 to 15 per cent in 2025. The visit also provided an opportunity to appreciate the Federal Government’s partnership with Malaria Consortium and introduce the organisation’s newly constituted Board.
Prof. Pate described the longstanding partnership between the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, through the National Malaria Elimination Programme, and Malaria Consortium as productive, noting that the substantial reduction in malaria prevalence demonstrates the impact of sustained and coordinated interventions.
He said the Federal Government would intensify efforts to further reduce the malaria burden through improved diagnosis, access to quality and affordable medicines, data-driven strategies at the subnational level, seasonal malaria chemoprevention, distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, vaccines where available, and other evidence-based interventions.
The Minister emphasised that while Nigeria appreciates the support and technical assistance provided by development partners, the primary responsibility for protecting the health of Nigerians ultimately rests with the Federal, State and Local Governments.
According to him, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is increasing investment in the health sector and expects state governments to channel improved revenues towards strengthening healthcare delivery.
Prof. Pate stressed that stronger domestic financing, resilient health systems and sustained technical partnerships will be critical to achieving lasting malaria elimination in Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that continued collaboration with organisations such as Malaria Consortium, alongside stronger government ownership and investment, would accelerate progress towards a healthier Nigeria and significantly reduce the impact of malaria on families and communities nationwide.
