The Federal Government has intensified efforts to prevent child deaths caused by hunger and malnutrition through a coordinated and sustainable national approach, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, has said.

Pate stated this during a meeting with the Eleanor Crook Foundation on Operation End Starvation, where he emphasised the need to mobilise governments and philanthropic partners to ensure that no child loses their life because of hunger.

He said the National Community Food Bank Programme was designed to provide an effective and scalable model for tackling hunger, with implementation planned across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The minister highlighted the importance of collaboration among federal, state and local governments, primary healthcare centres, the Bank of Agriculture and other relevant institutions to ensure that food support reaches vulnerable children and mothers.

He stressed that the initiative must focus on measurable results, transparency, accountability and proper targeting to avoid uncoordinated interventions.

Pate urged the Eleanor Crook Foundation and its partners to study existing government programmes and work with relevant institutions to strengthen implementation and expand the food bank initiative.

He also called for a clear sustainability plan, urging states to establish dedicated budget lines, provide the necessary human resources and integrate the programme into their domestic financing arrangements.

The minister said international support should serve as a catalyst for long-term progress rather than create continued dependence on external assistance.

He emphasised that a united effort involving government institutions, development partners and philanthropic organisations was necessary to significantly reduce child deaths caused by hunger and malnutrition across Nigeria.
