The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to intensify efforts toward safeguarding the dignity, rights, safety, and overall wellbeing of senior citizens across the country.

In a message marking the 2026 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, themed “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work,” the First Lady emphasized that older persons deserve respect, care, and protection in recognition of their lifelong contributions to society.

She expressed concern over the growing risks faced by the elderly, noting that many are still exposed to physical, emotional, financial, and psychological abuse despite their vulnerability and sacrifices to nation-building.

Senator Tinubu stressed the need for stronger systems of care and community support, adding that society must move beyond awareness campaigns to practical action that ensures the protection of elderly citizens.

As Nigeria’s population continues to age, she called for improved social protection mechanisms that guarantee no older person is neglected, abandoned, or left without adequate support.

The First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for policies and initiatives that promote dignity, inclusion, and care for senior citizens, describing them as an essential pillar of national heritage and wisdom.
