Former FCT Minister Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni Passes Away at 82

Retired Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under General Sani Abacha’s administration, passed away at 82 after a prolonged illness.
The Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, announced his death through a press statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Gyang Bere. According to the statement, the elder statesman passed on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Describing the late General’s passing as a monumental loss, Governor Mutfwang stated: “The Executive Governor of Plateau State deeply regrets to announce to the citizens of Plateau State and all patriotic Nigerians, the passing of the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni.”
Governor Mutfwang praised General Useni’s unwavering dedication to Nigeria, noting his impactful career in the military and politics. He highlighted Useni’s exemplary leadership, his service as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and later as Minister of the FCT, where he left a lasting legacy.
After he retired from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics and served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2015, he was elected as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The Governor described General Useni as a man of compassion, kindness, and selfless service, whose efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, will not be forgotten.
“His tireless dedication to fostering unity and his profound contributions to Nigeria’s military, political landscape, and community are a testament to his enduring legacy,” Mutfwang said.
On behalf of the government and people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang extended his condolences to General Useni’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation at large. He prayed for divine comfort and strength for all those mourning this irreparable loss.
Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni, fondly called “Jerry Boy” by many, will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s progress and his contributions to peace and development.
