“I don’t do a lot of speaking when I’m passing the sentence,” said Judge W. James Sizemore Jr. of the Southwestern Circuit Court of Georgia. “The bottom line is you’re going to receive a sentence of life in prison, which is the appropriate sentence for the conduct that you have been convicted of.” In addition to the life sentence, Poague will serve 20 additional years concurrently.
Poague remained stoic during the sentencing, though she had shown visible emotion earlier when the jury returned its verdict.
The tragic case began in January 2024 when Poague was arrested following the death of the toddler, identified as Romeo Angeles, also known as Jaxton Drew. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the child was found unresponsive on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University on January 14, 2024.
The court’s ruling marks the conclusion of a high-profile case that drew significant attention due to Poague’s former pageant status and the shocking nature of the crime.
