FRSC Intensifies Crackdown on Dangerous Driving, Overloading as Offenders Face Prosecution
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified its enforcement campaign against dangerous traffic practices, with intelligence-led operations and Mobile Court interventions in Abia State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) resulting in the prosecution of offenders and the interception of a heavily overloaded vehicle carrying passengers and motorcycles under hazardous conditions.
The Corps said the operations demonstrate its growing reliance on professional vigilance, intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies to identify and stop practices capable of endangering the lives of motorists, passengers and other road users.
Driver Jailed in Abia for Licence Violation, Attempted Escape
In Abia State, a Mobile Court presided over by His Worship C. E. Nwankpa sentenced Mr. Azubuike Dominic to one month imprisonment at Afara Correctional Centre.
Dominic was apprehended while driving a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle, registration number GWB 298 XY, without a valid driver’s licence.
The situation escalated when the driver allegedly escaped while being escorted to court by an FRSC arresting marshal. He was subsequently reapprehended several kilometres away following a coordinated pursuit involving FRSC personnel and the military.
The Corps said the incident reinforces its determination to ensure that enforcement actions and judicial proceedings are not undermined by attempts to evade lawful arrest.
FRSC Intercepts Truck Carrying 15 People, Eight Motorcycles
In another operation in Nyanya, FCT, FRSC personnel intercepted a Mitsubishi Canter truck, registration number GDD 815 ZP, after officers became suspicious of its sealed trampoline.
A closer inspection uncovered 15 people and eight motorcycles concealed beneath the covering and among other goods.
According to the Corps, the dangerous arrangement violated road safety regulations and posed serious risks to the lives of those being transported as well as other road users.
The driver, Mr. Umar Muhammadu, was also arrested after allegedly attempting to offer an FRSC marshal N500 and failing to produce a valid driver’s licence.
The vehicle and its occupants were subsequently handed over to the Divisional Police Officer, Mararaba, CSP M. Daniel, for further investigation and prosecution, following the directive of the Sector Commander, RS7.1 FCT, CC Tijjani Iliyasu.
Corps Warns Motorists Against Dangerous Practices
The FRSC described the incidents as evidence of a shift from routine road interception towards intelligence-led, evidence-based and technology-conscious enforcement, with personnel relying on professional observation and established Standard Operating Procedures to uncover concealed violations.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, has continued to charge personnel to remain vigilant, professional and firm in enforcing road safety regulations while strengthening cooperation with other security and law enforcement agencies.
The FRSC warned motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, against attempting to evade enforcement, concealing passengers or motorcycles, overloading vehicles, driving without valid licences or offering inducements to enforcement personnel.
It stressed that such violations would attract appropriate sanctions under the law.
The Corps reaffirmed that it would continue to deploy intelligence, professional enforcement, Mobile Courts and inter-agency collaboration to protect road users and reduce preventable crashes.
The FRSC urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations and prioritise the safety of human lives, warning that there will be no hiding place for reckless and dangerous driving on Nigerian roads.
