American swimming star Kate Douglass has reclaimed the women’s 50-metre freestyle world record in spectacular fashion, clocking 23.49 seconds in the preliminary heats of the 2026 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California, on Saturday.
The 24-year-old produced the record-breaking swim in the outdoor pool at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, slicing 0.06 seconds off the previous world record of 23.55 seconds set by fellow American Gretchen Walsh at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome on June 28.
The latest mark represents another twist in an extraordinary battle between two of America’s leading sprint swimmers. Douglass had originally set the 50m freestyle world record at 23.59 seconds on June 19, before Walsh lowered it to 23.55 just days later. Douglass has now taken the record back with an even faster performance.
A World Record Rivalry
The timing could hardly have been more dramatic. Walsh was also competing in the morning heats and finished in 23.78 seconds, giving her the second-fastest time of the session and setting up a highly anticipated meeting with Douglass in the final.
The rivalry is particularly compelling because the two Americans are training partners and former University of Virginia teammates. Their competition has quickly become one of the most fascinating storylines in international swimming.
Douglass arrived in Irvine already enjoying an outstanding championships. Earlier in the meet, she helped the United States establish a world record in the mixed 4x100m medley relay, alongside Walsh, Will Modglin and Van Mathias, with a time of 3:36.70.
She also produced a remarkable 51.69-second 100m freestyle split on the opening leg of the American 4x100m freestyle relay, coming within one-hundredth of the world record in that event.
A Star Building Toward Los Angeles 2028
Douglass is already a five-time Olympic medallist, and her form at the Pan Pacific Championships is providing another major indication of her ambitions ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Her versatility has made her one of the most dangerous swimmers in the world. In addition to sprint freestyle, she remains an elite breaststroke and individual-medley competitor, making her capable of challenging for medals across multiple events.
Now, with the 50m freestyle record back in her possession, all eyes turn to the final.
Douglass has the world record. Walsh has the challenge. And swimming fans have a showdown to watch.
