Germany Reaffirms Defence Partnership with Nigeria, Commends Role in West African Stability

The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Stefan Rossel, has described Nigeria as an anchor of stability in the West African sub-region, recognising its strategic role in promoting regional peace and security.

The Ambassador made this known on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

Ambassador Rossel thanked the CDS for the warm reception accorded him and his delegation, describing Nigeria as a valued partner of Germany. He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding bilateral relationship, particularly in the defence and security sectors, noting that sustained cooperation would create opportunities for more mutually beneficial projects and initiatives.

During the meeting, the German Technical Advisory Group (G-TAG) also briefed the CDS on the progress and impact of its ongoing training support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), highlighting efforts to improve professional competence and operational capacity.

In his response, General Oluyede appreciated the German Government for its continued partnership and support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He particularly acknowledged G-TAG’s contributions to the development of the Mechatronics School, Combat Tactical Care Training and Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Training, as well as other capacity-building initiatives and material support.

The CDS stressed the need to sustain and expand the existing defence cooperation, particularly in specialised military training and professional development. He called for more opportunities for strategic and advanced courses for officers and soldiers to enhance their professional skills and operational effectiveness.

General Oluyede assured the German Ambassador of the Armed Forces’ readiness to strengthen the existing partnership and explore additional areas of cooperation to address evolving security challenges and promote shared defence interests.

The visit highlights the strong defence relations between Nigeria and Germany and their shared commitment to strengthening military capacity, promoting regional stability and enhancing international security cooperation.
