FG Declares October 1 Public Holiday to Mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion, urging citizens to uphold unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Tunji-Ojo stressed that peace and stability remain essential to national development, while describing Nigeria’s diversity as a strength that should be harnessed for the progress of the country.
He also called on Nigerians to emulate the patriotism and sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers by contributing to the building of a peaceful and prosperous country that future generations can be proud of.
The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an enabling environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
He wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary celebration.
