Gombe begins installation of N3.40 billion solar Streetlights

Gombe state government has commenced the process of converting the source of powering street lights from generators to solar in the state.

According to our correspondent who went round Gombe metropolis, the first phase of the project which is expected to cover 71 kilometers of roads within the state capital has commenced with the installation of poles for the solar-powered street lights.

The Commissioner for Works and Transport Alhaji Abubakar Bappah, had told newsmen that the decision was a resolution of the State Executive Council (SEC) was to use available technology in reducing cost of governance by the present administration in the state.

According to him, when the street lights were first installed in the state generator was the best choice for powering the lights and that now that technology has evolve around the world solar is better and a cheaper source for powering the lights.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state of failure in sustaining street lighting initiative of the previous PDP government in the state.

However, Bappah assured that the N3.40 billion worth of solar power project is set to address the high cost of using generators to power street lights in the state and also get rid of the darkness.
