Google has partnered with actor and filmmaker Idris Elba to launch a $1 million initiative aimed at providing 100,000 African creatives with free access to artificial intelligence tools, including Gemini and other digital products.
The programme is designed to support creators in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Sierra Leone, helping them produce high-quality content more efficiently while reducing production costs through AI-powered technology.
According to the organisers, the initiative seeks to equip artists, filmmakers, writers, designers and other creative professionals with digital tools that will enhance innovation, productivity and global competitiveness.
Elba’s participation reflects his continued commitment to strengthening Africa’s creative industry. The award-winning actor has also championed plans to develop new creative infrastructure in Ghana and Zanzibar to support the growth of the continent’s entertainment sector.
The initiative comes as Africa’s media and entertainment industry continues to expand rapidly, with the sector projected to be worth $118 billion by 2031, driven by increasing internet access, digital innovation and growing demand for locally produced content.
