According to military sources, the incident occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on June 30, when troops of the 8 Division deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Tidibale acted on credible intelligence about terrorist activities in Tagirke Village.
The troops reportedly engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle, forcing the attackers to abandon their positions and flee the village.
However, while withdrawing from the area after the successful operation, the troops were ambushed by the fleeing terrorists.
During the exchange of gunfire, one of the military gun trucks struck an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in casualties among the personnel.
Two soldiers were killed in the attack, while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The bodies of the fallen soldiers were evacuated to the morgue of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto, while the injured personnel were taken to the 8 Division Medical Services and Hospital, where they received emergency treatment and are currently in stable condition.
Military sources said the damaged gun truck was recovered from the scene and towed back to FOB Tidibale for repairs and further assessment.
The sources added that troops have intensified offensive operations in the area to track down the fleeing terrorists, recover any missing weapons and deny the criminal elements freedom of movement.
The operation is part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing intelligence-led campaign to dismantle terrorist networks, enhance security and protect communities across the North-West.
