Governor Kefas Reaffirms Commitment to Education as Taraba Polytechnic Holds Maiden Convocation

The Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector, describing education as the foundation for sustainable development, innovation and human capital growth in the state.

Governor Kefas stated this on Saturday, August 1, 2026, while attending the maiden convocation ceremony of the Taraba State Polytechnic, Jalingo, held in the state capital.

The Governor congratulated the graduating students and commended their parents, guardians, lecturers and other stakeholders for their sacrifices and contributions to the students’ academic achievements.

He stressed that education must go beyond the acquisition of certificates, noting that it should equip young people with critical-thinking abilities, innovative skills and problem-solving capacity to enable them make meaningful contributions to society.

According to him, government has a responsibility not only to sustain educational institutions but also to reform and reposition them to meet contemporary demands.

Governor Kefas said his administration, since assuming office, had deliberately focused on rebuilding institutions, expanding educational opportunities and ensuring that citizens, irrespective of their backgrounds, have access to quality education.

He disclosed that the administration had provided the necessary support for the accreditation of academic programmes at the polytechnic, resulting in the successful accreditation of several programmes and strengthening the institution’s academic standards.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mike Dio Jen, described the maiden convocation as a landmark achievement in the history of the institution.

He attributed the progress recorded in the state’s tertiary education sector to Governor Kefas’ declaration of a state of emergency in education shortly after assuming office, which he said had helped drive significant reforms across the sector.

The Rector of Taraba State Polytechnic, Dr. Amos Danlami Agbu, expressed appreciation to the Governor for his commitment to education, human capital development and institutional growth.

He highlighted various interventions by the administration and urged the graduating students to deploy the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies towards improving their lives and contributing to the development of their communities, Taraba State and Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the graduating students, Emefo Kene commended Governor Kefas for reducing tuition fees, describing the fees as among the most affordable in the country and noting that the policy had made tertiary education more accessible to students.

The ceremony featured goodwill messages from dignitaries, including former Taraba State Governor Jolly Nyame, as well as the commissioning of a newly constructed office complex by Governor Kefas.

The maiden convocation marked an important milestone for Taraba State Polytechnic and highlighted the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen tertiary education and expand opportunities for young people across the state.
