IGP Disu Seeks Strategic Partnership with NJI to Strengthen Police Legal, Judicial Capacity
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has called for a stronger strategic partnership between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to enhance the professional capacity of police personnel through specialised legal, judicial and criminal justice training.
The IGP made the call during a courtesy visit to the National Judicial Institute, where he was received by the Administrator of the Institute, Hon. Justice Babatunde Adeniran Adejumo, OFR, alongside the Institute Secretary, Mr. Olumo Abdulazeez, Esq., and members of the management team.
During the engagement, IGP Disu reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the rule of law, professionalism and effective administration of criminal justice, stressing the importance of continuous capacity development for officers involved in investigation, prosecution and legal services.
The Inspector-General proposed a structured collaboration with the NJI to provide specialised and continuous training for Police lawyers, prosecutors, Investigating Police Officers (IPOs) and other relevant personnel.
He identified key areas for collaboration to include criminal justice administration, electronic evidence, cybercrime, digital forensics, human rights, prosecution advocacy and case management.
The IGP also proposed the introduction of executive education and professional certification programmes for police personnel, as well as joint seminars, workshops and research initiatives aimed at strengthening investigative and prosecutorial standards within the Force.
According to him, equipping police personnel with contemporary legal and investigative knowledge is essential to ensuring that criminal cases are properly investigated, professionally prosecuted and handled in accordance with established laws and judicial procedures.
Responding, the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute welcomed the proposal and expressed the Institute’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force in advancing professional development and strengthening the criminal justice system.
Justice Adejumo also appreciated the IGP for the establishment of a Police outpost within the National Judicial Institute, while requesting further cooperation to enhance security around the Institute and ensure a safe environment for judicial training and other activities.
The engagement underscores the growing importance of collaboration between law enforcement and judicial institutions in building a more professional, efficient and justice-driven criminal justice system.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to developing strategic institutional partnerships that promote professionalism, respect for the rule of law and effective criminal justice administration across the country.
