Team Nigeria has emerged with the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China, marking another significant achievement for the country’s education sector on the global stage.
The victory was announced by the Nigeria Spelling Bee on its official Facebook page on Sunday.
“Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China,” the organisation stated.
The four-member Nigerian team represented both Nigeria and the African continent after qualifying through the African Spelling Bee Championship held in Harare, Zimbabwe, before advancing to the global finals, which took place from July 10 to 20, 2026, in Shanghai.
The victorious team comprised:
Oluwadamilola Adeolu, the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion, from St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti;
Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin;
Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and
Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba.
Ar-Raheem International College also celebrated the outstanding performance of its students, Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf, confirming that both won medals during the prestigious international competition.
In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the school congratulated the students for their remarkable achievement, describing it as a proud moment for the institution and Nigeria.
The Spelling Bee World Cup brings together some of the world’s brightest young spellers, providing a platform for students to demonstrate excellence in language proficiency, vocabulary and academic discipline.
