Prof. Zaynab Alkali, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated authors and academics, is widely recognised as the first female novelist from Northern Nigeria, a distinction that has secured her place among Africa’s most influential literary figures.
Born on February 2, 1950, in Tura-Wazila, Borno State, Prof. Alkali has spent decades using literature to amplify the voices, aspirations and experiences of women, particularly those from Northern Nigeria.
She began her educational journey in Borno State before earning a degree in English at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. She later obtained a master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in African Literature, building a distinguished academic career that would span several decades.
Prof. Alkali lectured at the University of Maiduguri, where she played a significant role in developing literary scholarship, before joining Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where she later served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Throughout her academic career, she mentored generations of students and contributed immensely to the growth of literary studies in Nigeria.
Married to Prof. Muhammad Nur Alkali, she is also a mother of six and has successfully combined family life with an outstanding career in academia and creative writing.
A Voice for Northern Nigerian Women
Prof. Alkali rose to national and international prominence with the publication of her landmark novel, The Stillborn, in 1984. The novel broke new ground by portraying the realities, hopes and struggles of women in Northern Nigerian society, challenging stereotypes and expanding the representation of women in African literature.
