Lieutenant Princess Owowoh Makes History as First Nigerian Female Officer to Graduate from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
Lieutenant Princess Oluchukwu Owowoh has made history as the first female officer from Nigeria to successfully graduate from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in the United Kingdom, achieving a landmark milestone for the Nigerian Armed Forces and women in military service.
Born in 1999 in Abia State, Lieutenant Owowoh attended Army Day Secondary School, Asaba, where she developed an early passion for military service. She was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, joining the Academy as part of the 72 Regular Course.
At the NDA, she distinguished herself through academic excellence, leadership and discipline. She graduated with a First Class degree in Biological Sciences and became the first female cadet to serve as Company Senior Under Officer Charlie (CSUO C)—one of the highest leadership appointments available to cadets at the Academy.
Her outstanding performance earned her nomination to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, one of the world’s oldest and most respected military training institutions, renowned for producing military leaders from across the globe.
In April 2024, Lieutenant Owowoh successfully completed Sandhurst’s demanding Commissioning Course, becoming the first Nigerian female officer to achieve the feat. Her graduation marked a historic breakthrough for the Nigerian military and underscored the increasing role of women in leadership positions within the Armed Forces.
Following her successful completion of the course, she was promoted to the substantive rank of Lieutenant, in recognition of her professional accomplishments and service.
Lieutenant Owowoh’s remarkable journey reflects resilience, discipline, courage and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Her achievement has been widely celebrated as a source of national pride and a significant step forward in promoting gender inclusion and equal opportunities within Nigeria’s military.
